Participants Set New Expectations for Success:
OSBI College Students Graduate and Get Involved

Arizona and California OSBI Participants are getting involved in college life! Arizona College students have just completed their third semester at Estrella Mountain Community College, earning credit for  English 101 and Microsoft Office courses. Currently, during the summer, they are working on job training and job interview skills. In California, 6 participants enrolled for their first college semester at the College of San Mateo. Their first course this summer is Adaptive PE, which will provide the opportunity to practice skills such as navigating the campus and how to register for classes, while at the same time getting in a twice weekly individualized fitness sessions with a personal trainer. In the fall, these students will continue their college path by taking a College Readiness Course. We just couldn't be prouder of these students’ accomplishments in both AZ and CA. The benefits to our participants are plentiful, and they are eager to learn and participate! If you know an OSBI participant who is interested in enrolling in college courses, please contact their supervisor or director.

OSBI Growth and Cultivation

Glendale Gets a Cafeteria and a New Gym!

Keep on steppin'- OSBI is walking the walk! Scheduled to open in Mid-July at our Glendale/Creekside Campus are a full-sized gym and a multi-purpose Cafeteria and Meeting Room. Prior to this expansion, our life skills programs (DTAs) utilized the far North and the far South ends of a long stretch of suites. The middle suites were occupied by other businesses. These leases became available, and we were able to lease them to open Life Skills 5 and 6 Programs beginning in March, and now will add the Gym and Multi-Purpose Careteria and Meeting Room. The need was there, and, in true OSBI style, we have filled it! One of our most sought-after classes is Personal Fit with our personal training coach Jeni P. Jenni is pretty popular around here. Members are begging to get into her classes. She is tough but motivating and gets results!  The benefits to our members through the Personal Fit courses have been extreme; we are seeing major gains in individualized goals of weight loss, stamina increase, healthy habits, fitness, and self-confidence. Currently, in our very cramped fitness room on the Glendale Campus, we have only been able to serve 100 participants. In the new 1,200 sq. ft.  gym, we will be able to double that impact. The 1,500 sq. ft. Multi-Purpose Cafeteria and Meeting Room mirrors the layout of the addition we opened in Surprise last year, and will provide a clean and sanitary area for our participants to eat their lunch and socialize with their friends, as well as providing a space for large group classes, and meetings, staff in-service trainings, and evening informational meetings for parents and other community stakeholders. Stop by sometime to check out these exciting additions at our Glendale Campus. You will be impressed!

Vocational Ventures

Turning the Page on Increasing Employment Opportunity

The AZ Vocational Program has many job sites and partnerships, these community partners provide job opportunities for our vocational members who have personal goals of being contributing members of the workforce. This is one of the most important missions we can pursue at OSBI. Fair and equal employment opportunities are so important to us, our participants, their families, and to change societal perceptions in order to create more jobs for everyone who desires one. One of our long-time partnerships is a bookstore that our voc team runs at The Avondale Library. We named our store Turning Page. We wanted to give a shout out to the store as they have really been gaining momentum recently. They have implemented a variety of inventory and people are taking notice! At the store, they sell books, OSBI made artwork, culinary propriety items (sweet treats), and even small toys. They are a big hit with kids who frequent the library during the late morning hours to take in a story or two at story time. The participants operate the store Monday through Friday from 10am -2:30pm. On each shift, they work on the behind-the-scenes skills that it takes to run a retail operation, like stocking, counting down the register, maintaining excellent customer service practices, and helping out the staff in the library when asked. Swing by sometime and check it out, We are located at 11350 W. Civic Center Drive, Avondale AZ 85323.

Life Skills Thrills
New Photography Class in Surprise Provides Perspective

We are so grateful for the amazing staff that we have working throughout our multiple locations. So many eclectic and uniquely skilled individuals walk on to campus each day to share their talents with the participants they inspire and help to find their passions. Some staff have creative skill sets, some organizational gifts, some boundless patience, some extreme motivational energy. Whatever the characteristics of our diverse staff, there is an equally diverse participant population with many abilities to offer as well. "We learn from each other" states staff Blayne Medlock, who has been working at our Surprise Campus for about a year and a half. Blayne has built a following of his students who love creating with him in his media-based classes. Blayne is a great example of a staff who possesses qualities and skill sets which he can integrate into his teaching style and curriculum. In his past, Blayne worked with his school, local skate companies, and local musicians, creating videos for them; this has been something that he has been passionate about since age 12. In early June, Blayne started a photography class that is truly taking off with the participants. Blayne and the 10 students in this photography class have begun with the basics, learning about the equipment, timing, angles, and truly engaging in the process. He helps the students to build their individual portfolios and makes sure to adapt to each person’s physical needs when it comes to equipment and technical details. They hope to soon move from digital photography to begin also working with 35mm film and cameras, and  eventually dark room development processes. Blayne has found an outlet to create art and to share it with the individuals around him who he now has the chance to inspire through media-related art. He would argue that he is the one being inspired; but lucky for everyone, this inspiration goes both ways.
Way to FOCUS guys!!

Recreation Creation

We Are Family

The 2019 7th Annual Music Festival on May 24th and 25th at the Peoria Center for the Arts was a true unification of Abilities!  This has grown in momentum since it first began 7 years ago on a small stage with a few musicians. Part of the reason for its success has been the immense amount of local and even national support from the music community. Each year we have achieved the goal of inclusion, which is the main mission of the festival. We integrate local bands and OSBI bands to share the stage and their love of music. It is always a beautiful and moving thing to witness. Disabilities fade under the stage lights and everyone on stage is just doing something they love and making music with their band mates. Although this inclusive atmosphere is what we envision for the whole world someday, we realized we needed a little change. In the past, we mixed up the night's line up with a couple of our OSBI bands and then a local band or two, alternating the bands to create a night of rock n roll and creativity fueled by inclusion. This year, we peeled apart the local bands and integrated the band members into the OSBI bands. Through this version of the show, we witnessed TRUE inclusion, and everyone felt it! This year's headliner was Camile Sledge, of Phoenix Afrobeat and heir to the Sister Sledge empire. She rocked the house with all of the OSBI bands together on stage. Everyone belted We Are Family at the top of their lungs- fitting- we think!

We Are the Performers

This year's Annual Theater Showcase was our perfectly amazing rendition of Sleeping Beauty. Performed at the Peoria Center for the Arts, 21 of our participants put on quite a show! We laughed, we cried, we sang, and we can't wait for next year’s performance! Members can sign up through OSBI to participate in the Adaptive Works Theater Program, a theater company run by Briana Ferris at Theater Works. Culinary Cooks it Up
Highlights from Our Kitchen

The Culinary Program knows how to stay busy! With another successful Dinner in the rear view, they are on to the next thing. The June Culinary Dinner on the 28th was a great evening. The night was themed, Vive la Fiesta- Live the Party. We did! We were serenaded by a talented Mariachi Band who really spiced up the night. The Culinary Program Participants all worked so hard, as usual. They prepped, prepared, and served a muy bueno meal! If you unfortunately missed the dinner, it is our pleasure to share it with you in pictures. Many thanks to a new OSBI family member, Chet Provorse Chet. Chet has enjoyed a long, fulfilling career as a photographer. We are grateful to him for volunteering to capture the Culinary Dinner in these photos. Thanks Chet! So, what else has the Culinary Program been up to? Becca Mungovan, Culinary Program Director, says "We are excited for a new super cool partnership with Fresh Start Woman’s Foundation". They provide education, resources and support for women to positively transform their lives and strengthen our community. Recently the culinary team did a catering for them, and they loved it so much that they secured a contract with our Culinary team to cater their training classes each month. Also, thanks to Board Member and Executive Chef Chris Curtiss we are beginning a multi-faceted partnership with Sam’s Concepts Restaurants. We are exploring culinary training and employment opportunities, sales of our OSBI Culinary Proprietary Products at their restaurant locations, some very innovative fundraising opportuntities, and much more.  "Keep it up Culinary, you're really cookin!

Teamwork: What Moves You?

Bri Van Dyke has been a crucial part of the OSBI Family since the very beginning! One Step Beyond first opened its doors in 2003 and soon after, in 2004, Bri joined the small crew with her huge heart and many invaluable skills. Bri, (previously Bri Donathan), now Bri Van Dyke (Congratulations!), has played a huge role in the exponential growth and successes of OSBI. Imagine back to the first days at OSBI- there was one house, a handful of amazing participants, and a few dedicated staff. There was not a Recreation Program, there was not a Swim Team or a Gardening Program, a Commercial Kitchen, Annual Trips, or Ceramics Classes (just to name a few), but there was love and a desire to somehow provide these opportunities. We had to get there together, and Bri was part of that team. She helped to design and build these programs and opportunities from the ground up. If anyone knows these programs inside and out, it is Bri Van Dyke. Although Bri has lead many different departments and programs at OSBI, she has been in her current role as the Recreation and Arts Programs Director for 6 years. Bri, these opportunities wouldn’t be what they are today without your big heart, abundant knowledge, organizational skills, patience, and sincere dedication. Thank you!

Your Coin Makes CHANGE...

As you all know, OSBI is a nonprofit organization; we receive a majority of funds through the state government. What many people don't realize is that those funds (which we are grateful to have), are there to keep the lights on, the buildings staffed, and cover basic needs. What these funds do not get directed toward are the many unique programs that set us apart and provide the broad range of opportunities for our participants to explore and experience self-discovery. The funds don't cover our Annual Trips, our Music Festivals, our Personal Training Classes,  and so many of the programs that make us One Step Beyond.  That is why fundraising is a constant and necessary effort. It is vital to us to make sure that our participants have access to the social and extracurricular experiences that they deserve, desire, and promote their personal growth. It is also of the upmost importance to expand our services to the constantly growing  families who need the programs that we provide at OSBI. We must grow so that we can help others grow. Please visit OSBI.org to help us in our Mission in any way you can. Thank you!
